Canada is known for its’ abundance of spectacular cannabis strains, many of which become known for their potency, others become treasured for their exclusivity, while some are remembered for how they alter or shift the cannabis scene. UBC Chemo is an illustrious Canadian bred indica strain that is known for all of the above. Although the genetics of this strain are unknown, legends state that it was created by the globally recognized geneticist David Suzuki during the late 60s into the 70s at the University of British Columbia, where it received its’ namesake. Dr. Suzuki reportedly wanted to develop a powerful, heavy-hitting indica strain that would help ease the pain of cancer patients suffering from the adverse side effects of chemotherapy treatment. Now carried on by the Canadian legends Jordan of the Islands, UBC Chemo has become known for its’ unique woody aroma, impressive THC content and tenacious medicinal effects. This potent strain is highly regarded for its’ impressive THC content, which is found to be around 21% on average, with some phenotypes soaring as high as 29%! As an indica, UBC Chemo is like no other – this one of a kind strain is especially heavy-hitting, leaving many users couch-locked or in a deep, soothing sleep. The effects begin with an uplifting sense of euphoria that is great for taking away stress, with a case of mega munchies before transitioning into the sedating, relaxing body high it is most cherished for. With such a powerful high and strong, relaxing effects, UBC Chemo is ideal for those looking to deal with pain, insomnia, stress, lack of appetite and anxiety.

A legendary British Columbian born and bred strain, UBC Chemo is a pure indica with fascinating origins. Sometimes simply referred to as “Chemo”, this strain was allegedly developed by the famed Candian environmental activist and scientist, David Suzuki, at the University of British Columbia back in the 60s to 70s. It is said it was created for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and to help them handle the side effects of treatment. Since then, many other breeders have carried on the tradition in growing this BC plant, though it can be a rare find. While it has delicious herbs and woody flavours, it is more so adored all over for its extreme potent medical effects, just as it was originally bred for decades ago!
When using UBC Chemo, a little can go a long way as it is incredibly strong. Too much can easily induce a quick trip to la-la-land, and its effects are said to sometimes creep up on you before taking on its full strength. The strain offers high levels of relief mentally and physically, and a heaviness behind the eyes can be felt before it takes over the rest of your body and puts you in a couch locked state. It is quite sedative, and as such, is suited for treating bodily pains whether temporary or chronic, as well as nausea and arthritis. It also offers feelings of happiness and euphoria, which can help alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. A strong case of the munchies is common with UBC Chemo, so a loss of appetite can also be expected to dissipate when using this strain. Because it is so potent and sedative, it is best suited for evenings and can also help relieve those suffering from insomnia as it puts you down to a good night’s rest.
While UBC Chemo is a confirmed pure indica, its genetic lineage remains an unknown mystery with no speculation or consensus of parental strains. Its THC levels average at 21% potency but reaches upwards of 29%. While its origin story traces back to David Suzuki during his time at the University of British Columbia, one of the nation’s top academic institutions, today it is considered a clone only plant, and current breeders who continue its legacy include professional growers at BC Bud Depot, Federation Seeds and Jordan of the Islands.
Appearance & Aroma
UBC Chemo is considered a rarity in a multitude of ways, including its standout appearance, which many consider to resemble a bonsai, which is a Japanese miniature tree plant and style, bred and cultivated to resemble large scale trees. These nugs are round, and because they are so densely packed, can be stiff or hard at the touch. Its pistils are very long and wiry, and come in a dark, amber orange hue. With varying shades of light to dark greens, it is covered in large speckles of darker purples, and is highly resinous, with many fine crystal white trichomes giving it a frosty appearance. This strain is quite fragrant, and is delightfully so. While it can be pungent, its stronger aromas also include an earthy pine that is nice and fresh. Upon smoking, there is a slight citrus sweetness that is complemented by notes of herbs and florals!
